Managing invasive weeds
Effective management of undesirable weeds helps to enhance public safety, ensures the delivery of much needed services and supports healthy ecosystems.
Here’s a look at three invasive weeds commonly targeted in vegetation management:
Wild caraway
A biennial plant that can quickly outgrow native plants, wild caraway thrives in hayfields, pastures, roadsides and other disturbed areas. The plant is similar in appearance to other members of the carrot family, with feathery leaves. Wild caraway is identified by white groups of flowers and can be difficult to identify when not in flower.
Wild chervil
Wild chervil resembles other plants in the carrot and parsley family and is generally found in damp areas along roadways and pastures. It competes with crops and other plants for nutrients, water and light and can tolerate a wide range of conditions.
Wild parsnip
Another member of the carrot and parsley family, wild parsnip can invade disturbed areas such as roadsides and pastures. Wild parsnip can grow up to 1.5 m tall with compound leaves arranged in pairs, with sharply-toothed leaflets that are shaped like a mitten and outcompetes native vegetation, particularly crowding out lower-growing plants. The plant is adaptable to different environments and produces a large amount of seed, which contributes to the plant’s persistence and spread. Wild parsnip produces sap containing chemicals that can irritate human skin.
Reduced environmental impact
Rinskor active is a new structural class of synthetic auxin herbicide. It is not only extremely effective on many broadleaf weeds because of its mode of action, but also has a reduced environmental impact as it breaks down rapidly in soil, in water and in the tissue of tolerant plants. The low persistence in the environment combined with lower and flexible use rates means Milestone NXT has a more favourable environmental profile compared to many other herbicides.
Convenient weed control
Not only does Milestone NXT provide extended control of invasive broadleaf weeds, but this new herbicide offers consistent weed control across variable conditions. This product is also selective, so when it’s applied at recommended rates, Milestone NXT provides effective control of labeled weeds and does not harm grass or other desirable plant species.
Tank mixing and application is also convenient. The lower use rates mean the product doesn’t have to be handled as much as other herbicides and Milestone NXT can be tank-mixed with other select products when total vegetation control is desired.
How to use Milestone NXT
Timing
Time applications to target weeds after emergence and prior to flowering when weeds are actively growing. Only weeds present at the time of application will be controlled. Avoid applying to plants under stress.
Application rates
Acres treated: 28 ha/case at highest labelled rate. For best results, apply at 200 g/ha. Milestone NXT requires the addition of Gateway™ adjuvant at 0.25 - 0.5% v/v.
Individual plant applications: 2 g of Milestone NXT, 50 ml of surfactant in 10 L of water. Thoroughly wet, but not to point of runoff.
Water volume: Broadcast applications: Apply in a minimum of 200 L/ha total solution.
Rainfast: 4 hours
Tank mixes: Tank mix Milestone NXT with labelled products, including Garlon™ XRT, glyphosate or Arsenal herbicides. Milestone NXT can also be tank-mixed with 2,4-D for enhanced spectrum of control on a wide range of weeds. Refer to product label for rates and always read and follow the label.
